Exhibition: Claiming Space

As part of the exhibition Claiming Space (September 19, 2017—March 31, 2018) at the Jane Addams Hull House Museum, Creative Grounds participated with an interactive installation that focused on closed schools on the West Side – where 19 out of the 43 schools recorded in this research (2013) are located.

This interactive installation offers an overview of these school sites, data about their demographic composition before closure, among other information. The intention of this work is not only to raise awareness of the scale of this challenge, but also to imagine the possibilities for repurposing of these spaces by showcasing their architectural and significance, strategic location in their neighborhoods, and historic narratives.
